Our clients tend to prefer singers with professional-quality promotional materials; often times a small investment in a videographer or video crew for your video can be a deal breaker. Keep in mind that our clients receive hundreds of submissions and inquiries each week – they are likely to give their fullest attention to the videos and other promotional materials which look the most sleek and polished. This is not to say that your performance isn’t also valuable to them, however. It definitely must stand out above the rest. Some of these gigs are very competitive, with many performers submitting promo kits – your best bet is to emphasize your unique personality and strong points (musically and visually), while still fitting within the parameters of the job description. Also remember that you are being hired to put on a show, so clearly demonstrate your ability to do just that. The keys to landing a gig for a Lounge Vocalists applicant are not just to show your vocal prowess and versatility, but to show that you’re an experienced professional and you have great stage presence. We have countless vocal applicants who have no previous professional experience – this is not what our clients are looking for. And we also hear many singers who have a lot of formal training and are solid vocally, but they don’t know how to connect with their audience. As a lounge vocalist, you’ll be performing in very high-energy shows, so you must prove in your video that you’re able to get your crowd dancing, singing, clapping, or otherwise involved in the show. The appearance of a vocalist is important to our clients as well – they should be sexy, classy, and charming. The ships that have these lounge vocalists can have audiences of all ages, but most of the time the ages range from 30 - 70, so our clients usually tend towards vocalists who are at least 25 years old. Cruise ships are very upscale, so you should show that you’re comfortable in this kind of environment in your video; be sure to dress like you are performing for a wedding reception or other high-end function as opposed to a bar or club. Staying away from visible tattoos, multiple piercings, and outlandish hair styles will also help your cause.
