The "Inside Scoop" from M One Studios

Our clients tend to prefer singers with professional-quality promotional materials; often times a small investment in a videographer or video crew for your video can be a deal breaker. Keep in mind that our clients receive hundreds of submissions and inquiries each week – they are likely to give their fullest attention to the videos and other promotional materials which look the most sleek and polished. This is not to say that your actual performance isn’t also valuable to them, however. It definitely must stand out above the rest.

Some of these gigs are very competitive, with many performers submitting promo kits – your best bet is to emphasize your unique personality and strong points (musically and visually), while still fitting within the parameters of the job description. Also remember that you are being hired to put on a show, so clearly demonstrate your ability to do just that. The key to landing a Production Singer gig is to show that you look good, sing very well, and have the athletic prowess to dance for hours at a time. If you possess all three of these traits, you should be fine. Staying away from visible tattoos, multiple piercings, and outlandish hair styles is probably a good idea in your video as well – our clients are looking for singers with an “all-American” look.

Something else to keep in mind: these positions are few and far between. Even if you do have the skills required to be a production show vocalist, you still may have to wait several months before we can get you working. Also, we may have to send you to audition with another company or agency if there are no positions available with our most exclusive clients. The reason these gigs are so hard to break into is the fact that the contracts are very long with only 2-4 positions per ship. This is a good job, and once people do break in, they’re often inclined to stay around for several years. We can only bring a new applicant into a position once a veteran has decided they’d like to move on. But don’t worry too much about your audition, and don’t change what you do to fit our job description exactly – the bottom line is that you should always play up to your strong points.

This is one of our most competitive positions, and we have hundreds of applicants every month; be sure that you don’t submit your audition until you’re positive it is your best work. Good luck!
